God is in the tiny details and the quiet voices. We so misunderstand or devalue humility that we can’t hear Him. Because we won’t love the tiny, the seeming unimportant, we simply can’t imagine a God who will stop the universe and sit with us. Father, help us be humble. He is recovering from a stroke. I got an emergency call and I was 35 miles away but God protected me and help me get to the hospital in time. I was able to give this man last rites. As I was leaving the room, I was asked to go to another room. This family was looking for a priest, but no one could come, so I was able to give an elderly woman her last rites. Leaving that room, I was asked to step in another room. This man wasn’t Catholic but wanted prayers, and I was so blessed to pray with him and pray with his wife. Walking back to my car, I saw Family crying. They saw me see them and they looked so hopeful, so I walked over and sat with them, and prayed with them as they dealt with their brothers death. Most people don’t understand the life of a priest. It’s one of those situations where everyone knows exactly what the priest should do, but it’s because they don’t understand. They don’t know our lives. They don’t know the demands. One of the most important things you should know about most priests is that we love days like this. There was no employee arguments, there wasn’t any insurance issues, no hiring, no firing, no gossip, no meetings, no angry parents, nobody complaining about the way things are not. Just Jesus, some divine mercy & a lot of love and grace, all ministered by a broken but willing vessel. When He speaks comfort to the poor, it’s not because all poor people are good. We are body/soul unities & the connection between the two is so important. Those who are poor have a natural edge in spiritual matters because they understand need and dependence in a way that the wealthy don’t. Spiritually, we are all beggars; loved, treasured and cared for by a God who doesn’t despise our need, but offers to meet it. Don’t be ashamed of your moral or spiritual struggles that bring you to God, embrace them.
